Before learning to drive you must hold a PROVISIONAL DRIVING LICENCE.  You can apply for this up to 8 weeks before your 17th Birthday.

The current cost for a Provisional Driving Licence is £50.00 which needs to be sent off with original documents conferming your identity and passport style photos.

You can download a form from the web site WWW.direct.gov.uk  or you can get the D1 form from your local Post Office.

Once you have received your Provisional Licence and you are now 17 years old or over you must sign it and then book your driving lessons.

It is also a good idea to have your eye sight checked by the professionals before taking driving lessons as you must be able to read a new number plate from a distance of 26.5 meters, if you need to wear glasses or contact lenses to do this, you must wear them for driving. A failure to read the number plate on test with result in a fail.                              

Once you have booked your driving lessons and are enjoying driving you should also be learning for the THEORY TEST (if you have not already passed this part).                                                              

The THEORY TEST is made up of 2 parts                                                   

MULTIPLE CHOICE  =  made up of 50 questions with a pass mark of 43

  the questions where you have to touch the screan.

HAZARD PERCEPTION  = Is video clips which you have to respond to by clicking the button on the mouse.   You will watch a series of Video clips with every day road scenes and in each clip their will be at least on Hazard but one clip their will be 2 Hazards. You must respond quick to the developing hazard to gain a high score.

The price of the Theory test is £30.00

Once passed the Theory you have 2 years to pass the practical test.

When your instructor thinks you are ready for your Driving test they will let you know so you can prepare for the Driving Ability Test this test can only be taken if you have passed your theory test.

You will be given Mock Driving Tests.

Then your instructor will book your Driving Test For you with a cost to you of £56.50  ( weekdays ) £67.00 (saturdays) at a date and time that is convenient for you both.

At the Driving Test. = you must take both parts of your licence with you also your pass theory certificate and your test appointment letter. WITHOUT YOUR LICENCES YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE YOUR TEST.

THE DRIVING TEST

You will be asked to sign a form for insurance purposes just to clarify you are driving a car that is insured for you and the Examiner.

Now the test has began.  Then the Examiner will ask you to take him/her to the vehicle before entering the car the Examiner will ask you to read a numberplate.

He/She will also ask you 2 safety questions about the vehicle.    1show me questions (e.g. how to check the indicators are working).      1 tell me question (e.g. tell me how you would check that the power assisted steering is working).  Your instructor will go through all the questions they could ask you so you will have the ability and knowlage to answer any question asked.

You will be asked to follow the Examiners directions which will be given in good time you must show that you have a good knowlage of car handling and are a safe compitent driver.

You will be asked to do 2 reversing manouvres on your test. You may also be asked to carry out a Emergency stop.

You must not make any more than 15 driving faults to pass the Test (16 or more faults will result in a fail). if you get 15 driving faults you will pass.

You can only apply for your Full Driving Licence once both parts of the tests are Passed.
